UF Hosting Summer Equestrian Camps

June 23, 2005, Findlay, Ohio – High school students from all over the Midwest are on The University of Findlay’s campus this week to sharpen their horsemanship and riding skills.

The students are participating in the University’s 2005 Western Horsemanship School and English Riding Clinic, hosted by UF’s western and English riding programs.

Twenty-seven young riders from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, West Virginia and Pennsylvania are participating in the 2005 Western Horsemanship School. The camp, which is in progress until June 24, is taking place at the arenas and classrooms at UF’s South Campus Facility, 11613 CR 40, Findlay, OH 45840.

During the western camp, students are learning the same techniques that are taught in UF’s western equestrian studies program including horsemanship, western pleasure, showmanship, training, showing and the fundamentals of reining. Instructors for the camp are: Clark Bradley, the 2001 American Quarter Horse Association Professional Horseman of the Year and UF instructor of riding; and Steve Brown, director of UF’s western riding program. Brown has judged horse shows throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.

The English Riding Clinic is training approximately 30 young riders. The camp also is in progress until June 24, and is being held at UF’s James L. Child Jr. Equestrian Complex, located at the corner of Olive St. and CR 201 south of Findlay.

During the riding clinic, students are being instructed on the fundamentals of English riding include equitation, jumping techniques, dressage and stable management skills. Instructors for the camp are: Michelle Arnold, head coach of UF’s Intercollegiate Horse Show Association hunt seat team and riding instructor; and Jill Jewett, UF riding instructor.

During the camps, the students are staying in the University’s residence halls.
