UF inducts "Performing Arts Wall of Fame" Honorees

June 30, 2005, Findlay, Ohio—The Curtain Raisers Society Arts at The University of Findlay will induct three honorees into the Performing Arts Wall of Fame during the SummerStock 2005 Premiere Reception on July 6 at 6 p.m. in the lobby of the John and Hester Powell Grimm Theatre.

The Performing Arts Wall of Fame honors former students, faculty and community members who have given unselfishly of their time and energy to the advancement of the performing arts at UF. This year’s inductees are Wendene Shoupe, Betty Bozo and the late Margaret Firmin, all of Findlay.

Wendene Shoupe has a long history of involvement in music activities at The University of Findlay. In the 1960s and 1970s, Shoupe accompanied many students for their senior recitals, and recently resumed playing for students in the instrumental applied music program.

Shoupe also has performed numerous piano recitals for UF’s Bach’s Lunch and Senior Forum, including many duets with the late Mary Kirk, who was a 2004 Performing Arts Wall of Fame inductee. In addition, Shoupe has accompanied Dr. Micheal Anders, professor of music, for several Senior Forum programs.Shoupe actively supports SummerStock and UF’s theatre and music programs by frequently attending productions, recitals and concerts.

Betty Bozo was named secretary for the Findlay College music program in 1968. She held that position, which eventually involved all of the performing arts, until she retired in 2004. During her years at UF, Bozo also was the box office manager for the theatre program. Bozo continues to actively support the UF performing arts through membership in the Curtain Raisers Society and volunteering as an usher for theatre and music productions.

Margaret Firmin earned a bachelor’s degree from Findlay College in 1981 and was awarded an honorary doctorate in the performing arts from The University of Findlay in 1994 in recognition of her many achievements and contributions to the theatre arts. She assisted in 50 musical productions for UF and other area schools and local theaters between 1968 and 1998. Firmin was very active as a volunteer in the community. More than 50 years ago she helped found the Blanchard Valley Hospital Auxiliary, and she was a member of the Hancock County Children’s Services Board for more than 25 years.

At The University of Findlay, she co-chaired the fund-raising campaign for the Virginia B. Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion and was involved with the patterned gifts division of the Horizon Fund campaign. She and her husband established the John and Margaret Firmin Scholarship at The University of Findlay to be awarded to outstanding students who participate in theatre.Firmin passed away on June 9, 2000.
