Los Angeles Animator to Display Work at UF
Monday, June 06, 2005

Findlay, Ohio – An art display featuring work by David Katz, a Los Angeles-based animator, will be on display June 15 through Aug. 12 in the Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion, Gallery 5.

The exhibit will feature 25 of his drawings and his three-minute animation “Cartoon Sea,” which has been viewed on Public Broadcasting Stations across the country. The animation also has been shown at various film festivals throughout the nation.

A reception will be held Wednesday, June 22 at 7 p.m. in the Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion to recognize Katz and his wife, Judy Love Cohen. Cohen is the author of the children’s book series “You Can Be A Woman…” Katz illustrates the series, and he and his wife are the founders of Cascade Pass, which publishes the series. Katz and his wife also will be keynote speakers for UF’s Mazza Museum 2005 Summer Institute June 20-24.

Katz’s “Cartoon Sea” illustrates the importance of keeping the sea clean. He drew 5,800 separate files for the animation. All of the images were drawn on his home computer, and the entire process took eight months to complete.

Katz specializes in two-dimensional animations, which he describes as bright, colorful and child-like. He has created his own style of animation, which reflects the sand and sea environment he grew up with in Southern California.

His other animated works, “Cartoon Consciousness,” “Embryo” and “Mega 1” have been acquired by the Mississippi Museum of Art, the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum and the Bass Museum of Art. Katz is also an illustrator, songwriter, playwright and poet.

Located in the Virginia B. Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion on the UF campus, the Mazza Museum is raising funds for a $2.2 million campaign to expand the building by more than 11,000 square feet. The addition will provide more space for educational programs and for the preservation and protection of its more than 2,800 artworks. Completion of the addition is scheduled for 2007.
