Media Opportunity - New UF Students to March the Arch
Friday, August 26, 2005

Aug. 26, 2005, The University of Findlay’s annual Arch Ceremony, welcoming the Class of 2009, will take place Sunday, Aug. 28, beginning in the Koehler Complex.

Photo opportunities:

4:50 p.m. beginning in the Koehler Complex. Faculty in caps and gowns will begin the procession to the Griffith Memorial Arch located on the front lawn of Old Main.

5:20 p.m. at the Arch. Students from the Class of 2005 will begin their UF college experience by walking through the arch.

Tradition History:

The Griffith Memorial Arch was erected in 1923 in memory of Miss Caddie A. Griffith, Class of 1909. Her parents created the memorial upon her untimely death of intestinal flu in February 1923. Ever since, incoming freshmen march in through the arch just before the first classes start to signify their beginning at Findlay.

After commencement, the graduating seniors march out through the arch, marking the completion of their time at Findlay and their entry into the world beyond.

During their undergraduate years, students are careful not to walk through the arch until they graduate in homage to the widely-held superstition that those who go through the arch sooner won't make it to graduation.
