UF Faculty Member to Discuss Depression
Wednesday, September 07, 2005

Sept. 7, 2005, Findlay, Ohio – The University of Findlay’s Faculty Roundtable will meet Friday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m. in the Alumni Memorial Union’s Slough Conference Room to discuss Dr. Matt Stolick’s published review of the book “Against Depression,” by Peter Kramer. Stolick is an associate professor of philosophy at UF.

Stolick will explain the two major physiological theories of depression referenced in Kramer’s book. In his book, Kramer invites readers to see psychology and neurology as telling similar stories. “Like overwhelmed people who withdraw from social contact, overwhelmed neurons in the hippocampus become isolated,” Kramer argued. Stolick’s assessment will challenge that argument and discuss depression as a physical disease that should be treated like other physical diseases.

Stolick is an expert on the end-of-life debate, healthcare ethics, sports ethics and existentialism. He also researches philosophical issues regarding mental illness, specifically depression. His works, including “A Moral Argument Against Touchdown Celebrations,” are published in more than 20 publications. He holds a B.A. from Westminster College and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
