UF Appoints New Health Professions Faculty

Sept. 8, 2005, Findlay, Ohio – Dr. Patrick Malone, Dr. Marc A. Sweeney, Tara Beitzel and Theresa Leto, have been appointed to The University of Findlay’s health professions faculty.

Malone will serve as assistant dean of pharmacy and professor.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the Albany College of Pharmacy, and a Pharm.D. from the University of Michigan. He served a professor of pharmacy practice for the Creighton University Medical Center’s School of Pharmacy and Health Professions where he established the Drug Informatics Center at Immanuel Hospital. He also developed and directed the Web-based Pharmacy Pathway in the school’s Doctor of Pharmacy Program. Previously, he had appointments to the faculty at Ohio Northern University and the University of Washington.

Dr. Malone is first author of “Drug Information - A Guide for Pharmacists,” a widely used reference academic textbook. He has published and spoken on computer networking for pharmacists on a national level. In addition, he is a past chair of the Electronic-Based Instructional Resources SIG of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.

Malone has been on the Executive Committee for the Consortium for the Advancement of Medication Information Policy and Research, was named a Fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and is a member of the United States Pharmacopeia Council of Experts Committee on Information Development and Dissemination.

Sweeney will serve as associate professor of pharmacy practice and director of clinical pharmacy.

Dr. Sweeney holds a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Ohio Northern University and a Pharm.D. from The Ohio State University. He served as vice president and consultant pharmacist for the Palliative Care Consulting Group. Prior to that, he was director of experiential programs and associate professor of clinical pharmacy at Ohio Northern University, clinical assistant professor of pharmacology at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and director of clinical pharmacotherapeutics at Doctors Hospital Family Practice Centers.

Sweeny is the past president of the Ohio Pharmacists Association, the principal professional organization for pharmacists in Ohio. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the Merck Family Leadership Award and the Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmacy Leadership Award.

He also has served as a pharmacist for community, hospital and homecare pharmacies. Sweeney has been a consultant for the Ada Medical and Diagnostic Center, Abbott Laboratories, Central Ohio Poison Center and Pfizer.

Beitzel will serve as an instructor of occupational therapy at UF.

Beitzel holds a master’s degree in education from UF, and a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from Mount Mary College. Prior to coming to UF, she worked for Sparrow Home Health Care, Okemos, Mich.; Ingham Visiting Nurses, Lansing, Mich.; and Rehabilitation Specialists, Inc., Holt Mich. She is a licensed occupational therapist and is a member of the American Occupational Association.

Leto will serve as an instructor of occupational therapy at UF.

Leto holds a master of occupational therapy degree, and a bachelor’s degree in health science from The University of Findlay. She has served as clinical coordinator and chair of the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program at the University of Saint Francis; clinical occupational therapy assistant at Lifelines Rehabilitation Services, Fort Wayne, Ind.; and specialized in psychiatric occupational therapy at the St. Joseph Medical Center, Fort Wayne, Ind.
