Thursday, November 03, 2005

Findlay, Ohio – Former star of the sitcom “Designing Women” Dixie Carter will visit The University of Findlay Nov. 14-16 as the third recipient of the Don and Barb Hennigs Chair for Theatre Guest Artists.

The public is invited to attend a public interview and question and answer session with Carter on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. in UF’s John and Hester Powell Grimm Theatre.

During her visit, Carter also will speak to classes, interact with UF theatre students and faculty and be the guest of honor at a reception for theatre students, faculty and staff.

Carter has a vast array of theatre experiences including 11 seasons at The Café Carlyle in New York; Broadway performances such as “Thoroughly Modern Mille,” “Master Class,” “Pal Joey” and “Sextet;” more than 10 off-Broadway credits in New York and more than 15 regional credits.

Most recently, Carter has finished at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C., as Mrs. Erlynne in Oscar Wilde’s “Lady Windermere’s Fan.”  On Oct. 5, Carter and her husband, actor Hal Holbrook, opened at Houston’s Alley Theatre in the world premier of a new play by Ken Ludwig, “Be My Baby.”

In addition to her theatre credentials, Carter is also well-known for her role as Julia Sugarbaker on the sitcom “Designing Women.”  She has starred in seven other television series and has made several appearances on other shows in the last year.

Carter’s accomplishments go beyond theatre and television.  In 1991, she released an album, “Dixie Carter Sings John Wallowitch at The Carlyle.”  She also produced two fitness videos and authored “Trying to Get to Heaven,” published by Simon and Schuster in 1996.

The Don and Barb Hennigs Chair for Theatre Guest Artists was started in 2003 to bring to campus national or international actors to share their expertise with UF theatre students.  The chair allows for one guest per year for at least a weekend.

Tickets for Carter’s public interview are free, but must be reserved in advance by calling the Box Office at 419-434-5335.
