Findlay, Ohio - The U.S. Postal Service will immortalize eight
lively and colorful characters from children’s literature by placing
their images on commemorative postage stamps during a dedication
ceremony Jan. 10 at 11 a.m. at the University's Mazza Museum of
International Art from Children's Picture Books.

Dr. DeBow Freed, UF president, and representatives from the
United States Postal Service will be on hand to dedicate the new stamps.
The sheet of 16 stamps depicts eight
children’s book animals:
- The caterpillar from "The Very Hungry
Caterpillar;"
- Maisy from "Maisy’s ABC;"
- Curious George from "Curious George
Flies a Kite;"
- Oliva the piglet from "Olivia;"
- Max from "Where the Wild
Things Are;"
- Wilbur the pig from "Charlotte’s Web;"
- Frederick the mouse
from "Frederick;" and
- The trick red fox from Dr. Seuss’ "Fox in Socks."
The
Mazza Museum owns original artwork from three of the eight
authors/illustrators whose work is being featured on the stamps. The
pieces include:
- An Eric Carle piece from the book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar,"
- A piece from H.A. Rey's "Curious George," and
- A Dr. Seuss piece from "Cat in the Hat."
As a joint issuance with the United Kingdom’s Royal
Mail, two of the stamps — the Hungry Caterpillar and Ms. Maisy — will
be included as part of Royal Mail’s “Animal Tales” stamps that will be
issued that day at the U.S. Embassy in London.
Findlay, Ohio, as host to
the U.S. First-Day-of-Issue ceremony, holds the unique distinction of
being the only city in the nation where the stamps will be available
Jan. 10. A limited number of Royal Mail’s “Animal Tales” stamps
will only be available at the Findlay event. The U.S. stamps will
be available nationwide Jan. 11.
The Mazza Museum is the world's
first and largest teaching museum devoted to literacy and the art of
children's picture books. It contains more than 3,000 pieces of original artwork and promotes
literacy through educational programs for children and adults by utilizing its
preeminent collection of original art from children's picture books.
