Wood Engraving Art Exhibit Begins Jan. 9
Thursday, January 05, 2006
Findlay, Ohio – More than 60 hand-printed wood engravings will be on
exhibit at The University of Findlay’s Dudley and Mary Marks Lea
Gallery Jan. 9 – Feb. 3. The collection is by award-winning artist
Sylvia Pixley.

Pixley specializes in creating original wood engravings that are used
to craft relief prints. According to Pixley, the process of creating
the images begins with engraving a reversed design into grain maple
wood. Oil-based ink is then applied to the carving and transferred to
paper. Some original prints are then hand-painted with watercolors.
The exhibit’s theme reflects nature with subjects ranging from
portraits of flowers, small animals and birds to tranquil wooded
settings and grand landscapes.
She has received numerous awards for her art including Best of Show at
the Black Swamp Arts Festival in Bowling Green, Ohio; the Judges’
Choice Award at the Leeper Park Art Fair in South Bend, Ind.; and
the Merit Award at the Detroit Festival of Arts.

Pixley’s work also is exhibited at the Ann Arbor Art Center, the Toledo
Museum of Art's Collector's Corner, and the River Gallery in Chelsea,
Mich.
She is a member of the Wood Engraver's Network, the Michigan Guild of
Artists and Artisans in Ann Arbor, Mich., the Toledo Museum of Art, and
the Ann Arbor Art Center.
The Lea Gallery, located in UF’s Virginia B. Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion, is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
