Hancock Youth Leadership to Learn About Law Enforcement at UF
Thursday, January 12, 2006

Findlay, Ohio – More than 40 youth and high school students who are a part of Hancock Youth Leadership (HYL) will spend Monday, Jan. 16 at The University of Findlay’s Environmental Resource Training Center (5000 Fostoria Road, Findlay, Ohio) learning about the different areas of public safety.  The event is part of HYL’s annual Public Safety Day.

During the program, the students will experience first-hand a firearm training simulator. The University’s School of Environmental and Emergency Management (SEEM) uses the simulator to help train law enforcement professionals on how to react when they are under gun fire.  The session will be led by Mike Webber, UF adjunct trainer and retired State Highway Patrol post commander.

The students also will learn about:
  • The various aspects of terrorism and how to prepare themselves and their families for a terrorist attack;
  • Health hazards that are public safety concerns including hazardous materials and the bird flu; and
  • Why diversity is important, led by Mark Butler, manager of diversity at Marathon Petroleum Co., LLC.
As part of Public Safety Day, the students also will tour Findlay Fire Department’s Station #4 on County Road 236.

According to Harold Huffman, program manager for SEEM, the program will give the young leaders a chance to experience many different aspects of public safety, and increase their awareness and understanding of the work that is done to keep society safe.
