Faculty Recognized for Teaching Excellence

Findlay, Ohio – Six faculty members have been honored for their teaching excellence by The University of Findlay.

Douglas S. Salveson, professor of art and gallery director, received the Elizabeth S. Gupta Award for Excellence in Fine Arts Teaching. Salveson joined the UF faculty in 1971 after completing his MFA in painting at the University of Cincinnati. He has had numerous personal art exhibitions, and his work is included in private and corporate collections including Mobil Oil in Pittsburgh, Libby-Owens-Ford in Toledo and Xerox Corp. in Chicago, among others. In addition to his MFA, he holds a bachelor of arts degree from Moorhead State College.

The Shiv Kumar Gupta Award for Excellence in Business Teaching went to Maria V. Gamba-Riedel, assistant professor of business, who teaches micro- and macroeconomics and international business.  She is currently completing a doctoral degree in management, with a dissertation focusing on international students’ perspectives in choosing a private university. She also holds a bachelor of arts degree from the University of the Philippines and a master of science degree from Wright State University.

Dr. Michael C. Reed, professor of TESOL and bilingual education, was named the first Honorary Faculty Chair in the College of Liberal Arts. He will serve in this position for the 2006-07 academic year. Reed has served on the University’s Graduate Council, Faculty Affairs and Faculty Senate, including service as chair of the last two. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Allegheny College, a master of arts degree from Temple University and his doctoral degree from Georgetown University.

Dr. Michael T. Homsher, associate professor of environmental, safety and health management, was named the first Honorary Faculty Chair in the College of Sciences. Homsher has been important in the early growth of the environmental program and a leading faculty member in integrating technology into his classroom. He holds a bachelor of science degree from Marietta College, a master of science degree from Southern Connecticut State College and a Ph.D. from The University of Toledo.

Receiving the David L. Allen Award for Teaching Excellence, which recognizes faculty members for holistic teaching excellence, was Dr. Linda Peck, professor of animal science and director of the Pre-Veterinary Medicine Program. Peck developed and organized the University’s Pre-Veterinary Medicine Program and continues as associate veterinarian at Findlay Animal Hospital and Findlay Animal Care Center. Peck earned both a bachelor of science and a doctor of veterinary medicine degree from The Ohio State University.

Dorothy Copas, assistant professor of education and director of early childhood programs, received the Founders’ Academic Excellence Award.

Copas joined the faculty in January 2000 after 31 years of experience in public education as a teacher and elementary principal. Her courses include Teaching as a Profession, Play in Discovery Environments, Capstone in Early Childhood and Assessment in Young Children. Copas holds a bachelor of science degree in elementary education, with an emphasis in special education, from Ashland University and a master’s degree in education from Bowling Green State University.
