Wednesday, April 05, 2006
Findlay, Ohio – The University of Findlay is accepting applications to
its week-long summer camp for fifth through seventh graders who enjoy
fun activities and socializing and who would like to attain a healthier
weight.
L.A.F.F. Camp (Lively Activities for Fun and Fitness) is a unique
summer day camp that is designed to teach the youngsters how to make
healthy choices that correspond with their interests in an environment
that fosters confidence promotes healthy choices and advances a healthy
lifestyle.
It will be held June 19-23 and is open to campers age 9 to 12 years
old. There are also five follow-up sessions occurring once a month July
through November to help promote long-term success. The cost for the
camp is $65 for the week.
According to Laura Schmelzer, camp director and UF assistant professor
of occupational therapy, the camp can provide a jump start toward
leading a healthier lifestyle. “With hectic schedules and so many fast
food options is it very important that children learn how to make
healthy choices,” Schmelzer explained. “Change is difficult, and
self-esteem is a key component for many of these kids. With that in
mind, the camp provides an opportunity for children to participate in
an environment that builds self-esteem.”
The camp is sponsored by UF’s Occupational Therapy Program, the Findlay Family YMCA and the Findlay Rotary Club.
