More Than 700 To Complete Service Projects During UF Orientation Event
Thursday, August 24, 2006
The University of Findlay will host its fifth annual New Student
Orientation Service Project on Saturday, Aug. 26, from 9:30 a.m. to
4:30 p.m.
A joint effort of the University’s Campus Compact Center for Service
& Learning and the First-Year Experience program (FYE), this event
promotes the importance of volunteerism and service. This year, more
than 700 members of the University community, including almost 700
first-year students, are scheduled to volunteer in the Findlay
community to provide more than 2,000 hours of hands-on help to more
than 30 non-profit, civic and government organizations.
Led by instructors in UF’s FYE, orientation leaders and UF staff,
first-year students will perform three hours of service during the
orientation weekend before their first official day of classes on Aug.
28.
Students will be dispersed around town to places such as Century Health
Inc. to clean and paint, the Women’s Resource Center to clean and
prepare client supplies, Fort Findlay Playhouse to paint and mulch and
Birchaven Retirement Village to play games and visit with residents.
“Inclusive in the university's mission to
‘equip students for meaningful lives and productive careers’ is the
importance of civic engagement. The orientation project is just one
step in examining an aspect of meaningful lives,” said Dr. Diana
Montague, FYE director.
