The discussion will be taped on Sept. 18 in a closed studio and
televised on UF-TV cable channel 20 on Wednesday, Sept. 20, and
Saturday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m.
Dennis Stevens, Ph.D., dean of the College of
Liberal Arts, will facilitate the discussion. Members of the roundtable
include Mark Polelle, Ph.D., director of history, political science and
the law and liberal arts; Paul Chwialkowski, Ph.D., associate professor
of social science, criminal justice and public administration; the Hon.
Judge Reginald J. Routson, Common Pleas Court of Hancock County; and
Bob Hesse, editor of The Courier.
The mission of Constitution Day Inc. is to perpetuate the Constitution to
each succeeding generation; to promote the annual national simultaneous
recitation of the Preamble across all of America, especially in the
schools; to involve all 50 states in the roll call of states in the
order they ratified the Constitution or were admitted to the Union; to
educate each new generation to the uniqueness and brilliance of the
Constitution and to show the need to protect and defend the
Constitution to maintain the liberties of the United States.
Gen. Colin Powell will lead the nationwide annual traditional
recitation of the preamble to the U.S. Constitution. This year’s
recitation will be dedicated to and honor our military all around the
world. National figures who have previously led the preamble include
President George Bush Sr., associate justice of the United States
Anthony Kennedy, Gen. Tommy Franks, Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice
Roy Moore and Gov. Edward Rendell of Pennsylvania.
