Local Students Compete in UF’s Fear Factor
Friday, September 29, 2006
On Saturday, Sept. 30, approximately 120 students will arrive at the
University’s Environmental Resource Training Center, located at 5000
Fostoria Rd., to compete in Fear Factor – an event that combines
intellectual knowledge, situational problem-solving skills, athletic
ability and team building.
The event, in its fifth year, is organized and
implemented by UF’s student-led Oiler Environmental, Safety and Health
Organization, a group comprised of students from a variety of UF’s
academic programs. Approximately 45 UF students will be on site to
facilitate the competition throughout the day.
According to Timothy Murphy, Ph.D., associate
professor of environmental safety and health management, Fear Factor is
designed to “showcase the University’s activities and programs in a fun
way to students and to the community.”
Students enter the competition in teams of six; four
high school teams and 16 college teams have entered the competition.
In the morning, students will compete in individual
events, winning points for their teams. In the afternoon, teams will
participate in a five-station relay race. Stations in the relay race
include a hunt in the woods for the team’s flag, slip ’n’ slide, rock
climbing, a crawl through an 18-inch pipe and finally a paintball
target shoot.
Following the events at the facility on Fostoria Road, an awards
ceremony will take place in the University’s Koehler Center on the main
campus.
Fear Factor is sponsored by the UF Student
Government Association, Convocations Committee, College of Science,
School of Environmental Emergency Management and the environmental
academic programs.
