UF Speaker to Discuss Poverty

Sue Nelle DeHart, Ed.D., will present “Understanding Poverty:
Strategies for Teaching Students from Poverty” at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 in the
Winebrenner Theological Seminary TLB Foundation Convocation Center.
Sponsored by The University of Findlay’s College of Education, the
event is free and open to the public.
DeHart will cover the following topics in her presentation:
• How economic class affects behaviors and mindsets.
• Why students from generational poverty often fear being educated.
• The “hidden rules” within economic classes.
• Discipline interventions that improve behavior.
• The eight resources that make a difference in success.
DeHart has been a professional educator since 1964, having served in
many roles, including teacher of the deaf, special education teacher,
K-12 talented and gifted coordinator, curriculum consultant, elementary
principal and adjunct professor. She taught graduate courses at the
University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University and has
presented hundreds of workshops nationally and internationally.
She holds a bachelor of arts degree in deaf education and general
education (K-8) from Oklahoma College for Women, a master of arts
degree in special education and administration/supervision and a
doctorate in early childhood education with a minor in gifted education
from Texas Woman’s University.
Currently, DeHart works full-time as a consultant for Dr. Ruby Payne,
who founded Aha! Process Inc., a company devoted to educating
professionals and community leaders about the effects of class and
poverty on society. The company spreads the message that in all types
of social interaction, poverty creates obstacles that require specific
tactics to overcome.
