In his book, Orwell depicts the horrors of man’s fate in a society where Big Brother is always watching and censoring thoughts and behavior.

“I do not believe that the kind of society I describe necessarily will arrive, but I believe that something resembling it could arrive. The moral to be drawn from the dangerous nightmare situation is a simple one: Don’t let it happen. It depends on you,” wrote Orwell.

“1984” follows Winston Smith, a character who lives in London in a totalitarian society. Winston is disgusted with his oppressed life and secretly longs to join the fabled Brotherhood, a supposed group of underground rebels intent on overthrowing the government.

Winston meets Julia, and they secretly fall in love and have an affair, something which is considered a crime. The rest of the story is one of deceit, torture and heartbreak.
