UF Professor to Discuss Bilingualism
Tuesday, October 17, 2006
Michael Reed, Ph.D., will give a presentation titled “Bilingualism in
Childhood and Adulthood: Certainties and Enigmas” at 7 p.m. Thursday,
Oct. 19, in The University of Findlay’s Pfeiffer Lecture Hall, located
in the Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion. This event is free and open to the
general public.
Reed will compare and contrast childhood
bilingualism with adult bilingualism. He also will talk about recent
research he has completed on the topic. In his studies, Reed looked at
factors that positively impacted one’s bilingualism and factors that
may prevent an adult language learner from reaching full proficiency in
the second language.
The presentation is sponsored by UF’s College of Liberal Arts.
At The University, Reed is a professor of Teaching
English to Students of Other Languages (TESOL) and bilingual education.
He also is director of the master’s in TESOL and the Intensive English
Language Program. Reed holds a doctorate in bilingual education from
Georgetown University, a master of arts in English as a second language
from Temple University and a bachelor of arts in history from Allegheny
College. He has attended many professional conferences related to his
area of study and has been a presenter at numerous workshops. Reed’s
work has been printed in publications including the Ohio Journal of
English Language Arts, Ohio TESOL Newsletter and the Mentor College
Course for Migrant Educators.
