Steffen Helps UF Freshmen Start “Thinking in New Directions”
Thursday, October 12, 2006

The University of Findlay will host a freshman convocation from 8 a.m. until noon Oct. 18 in Winebrenner Seminary, adjacent to the UF campus.

Jim Steffen
 Jim Steffen will be the
keynote speaker for a freshman convocation Oct. 18.

Jim Steffen, owner of Jim’s Gym Family Fitness Center, is the keynote speaker for the convocation, titled “Thinking in New Directions.”

Steffen, author of “Fun Fitness for Families: How to Exercise, Eat Right and Be Great!” is a motivational speaker who has delivered his presentation to schools, churches and corporations. After working as a personal trainer in Chicago and San Diego, Steffen returned to his hometown, Findlay, and opened Jim’s Gym. The fitness center now serves more than 500 members.

In addition to Steffen’s presentation, the convocation features break-out groups, hands-on activities and group discussions among first-year students and faculty members.

According to Diana Montague, Ph.D., First-Year Experience director, the convocation is designed to offer first-year students exciting, mid-semester opportunities to address critical thinking, stress management, personal goal setting and other issues first-year students are faced with.

“The University offers a rich variety of opportunities to explore new ideas in venues that welcome reflection and debate. The convocation will offer a taste of this to first-year students,” said Montague.

The event is mandatory for all first-year students, who are excused from classes until noon.

The convocation is coordinated through the First-Year Experience program, which is designed to provide a helpful transition — academically, socially, emotionally, mentally and culturally — from high school to university life for first-time, first-year students.
