Homsher to Discuss Online Technology and Science Curricula at UF
Thursday, October 26, 2006
| | Michael T. Homsher, Ph.D. | Michael T. Homsher, Ph.D., will present “Online Technology Applications
in Science Curricula” at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, in Martin Lecture
Hall as part of The University of Findlay’s College of Science Seminar
and Lecture Series. This event is free and open to the public.
Homsher is an associate professor in the School of
Environmental and Emergency Management and the College of Science
2006-2007 faculty chair.
In his presentation, Homsher will discuss a
combination of teaching strategies that are being used at The
University including Blackboard technology and a national science
education model. He will share specific information about enhancing the
use of Blackboard with Tegrity, recorded streaming audiovisual
presentations; online laboratories, www.latenitelabs.com; and Visual
Sampling Plan. This approach draws on National Science Foundation (NSF)
interdisciplinary science teaching strategies developed and applied in
secondary and postsecondary institutions.
UF focuses on an inquiry approach rather than
content, incorporating facts as needed to allow participants to learn
in a problem-solving context. This method is part of a three-year NSF
project, which traces changes in faculty teaching practices after
participation in a NSF workshop.
Homsher holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and
chemistry, a master’s degree in chemistry and a doctorate in biology
and aquatic ecology. After working in the corporate world for 10 years,
he came to The University in 1990 as the first full-time academic
professor in the environmental and hazardous materials program.
Martin Lecture Hall is located in the Brewer Center for Health Sciences on the UF campus.
