The University of Findlay Showing “On a Roll” Documentary
Monday, October 30, 2006
The film “On a Roll: Family, Disability and the American Dream” will be
shown from 6:30 – 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6, in Winebrenner Seminary. The
showing of the film is sponsored by The University of Findlay’s Office
of Disability Services. This event is free and open to the community.
The independent documentary created by Joanne Caputo is based on the
life of Greg Smith, host and founder of the nationally syndicated “On a
Roll” talk radio program and a 2002 inductee into the National Speakers
Association. In the film, Smith and his family bare all in an
unflinching portrait of a 65-pound man striving for the American dream.
Diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at age 3, Smith has dedicated his
career to increasing disability awareness through the media and public
speaking.
By the time Smith reached age 13, his spine was fused with metal rods,
and he began using a power wheelchair. In high school, Smith played
percussion in the marching band and “marched” on the field using a foot
control on his wheelchair. He discovered his love for talk radio as a
play-by-play announcer for football, basketball and baseball games on
the student radio station.
Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in broadcasting from Arizona State
University where he was the sports director for the on-campus radio
station.
After graduation, Smith continued to work in radio and started
“On a Roll” as a local AM program in Phoenix in 1992. In the next 11
years, the program expanded to include more than 70 national stations.
Smith, the father of three, travels the globe in support of the new
civil rights movement and is currently the host of a new syndicated
radio show called “The Strength Coach.”
