Many Events Planned for Diversity Week Nov. 13-18

A black author and pianist who has traveled into the heart of the Ku Klux Klan, a white college student who experienced life as a black woman and a group of three entertainers who use humor to create awareness of racial stereotyping are among the speakers and performers who will make appearances on The University of Findlay campus during Diversity Week Nov. 13-18.

The Office of Intercultural Student Services is sponsoring a wristband campaign, “One Race, One World, One People.” Students, faculty and staff can pick up violet wristbands 11 a.m.
– 1 p.m. Nov. 13 – 14.

An American Sign Language Social is planned from 7 – 8:30 p.m. Nov. 13 in the Alumni Memorial Union (AMU) Multi-Purpose Room. Sponsored by the American Sign Language Club, this event is free to UF students, faculty and staff and community members.

A UF Forum on Diversity will be held 7 – 8 p.m. Nov. 13, in the AMU Endly Room. Co-sponsored by The Pulse and the Office of Intercultural Student Services, this event is free and open to UF faculty, staff and students and community members. Comments and questions are welcome for discussion.

From 7 – 8:30 p.m. Nov. 14, Rose Wurgel from the FX documentary series “Black. White.” will talk about her experience as a participant in the television experiment. Using expert makeup techniques, one white family and one black family switched races. Their experience living as members of a different race was documented in the television series. The Black Student Union and the Office of Intercultural Student Services are co-sponsors of this event, which is free to UF students, faculty and staff and $1 for community members.

Daryl Davis will present “Klan-Destine Relationships” at 9:30 p.m. Nov. 15 in Ritz Auditorium, located in Old Main. An author and Grammy Award-winning pianist, Davis will tell the story of his journey as a black man into the heart of one of America’s most fanatical institutions, the Ku Klux Klan. Davis’ presentation is sponsored by Campus Program Board (CPB). This event is free to UF students, faculty and staff and $1 for community members.

“Understanding Race,” a documentary film, will be shown 7 – 8 p.m. Nov. 16 in Malcolm Lecture Hall, located in the Frost Science Center. Topics in the video include the anthropological unity of Homo sapiens; sanctioned discrimination, such as segregation; cultural biases based upon racial stereotypes; and the underlying humanity that inextricably links us all. UF students, faculty and staff and community members are welcome to attend this event, sponsored by the Office of Intercultural Student Services.

At 8 p.m. Nov. 17 in the AMU Multi-Purpose Room, CPB is sponsoring Sekou and Steve, a pair of actors, writers and poets who transcend the walls of racial, cultural and political prejudice through their performance. Both men have won national awards for their talents. This event is free to UF students, faculty and staff and $1 for community members.

Co-sponsored by CPB and the Office of Intercultural Student Services, “NWC – The Race Show” will perform at 8 p.m. Nov. 18 in the AMU multi-purpose room. Using humor and theater smarts, three racially diverse performers point out the absurdities of racial stereotyping through a series of vignettes tracing their own search for identity and a positive self-image. This event is free to UF students, faculty and staff and $1 for community members.
