UF Student Submits Essay, Findlay-Hancock County Receives Award
Friday, January 26, 2007

At a press conference Jan. 25 to announce that Findlay-Hancock County is a winner of the 100 Best Communities for Young People award, Diana Musgrave, a senior majoring in communication at The University of Findlay, shared her thoughts as to why Findlay, Ohio, is a great community for young people.

Musgrave was one of only three Hancock County students to be asked to submit an essay as part of the application process. In her essay, Musgrave mentioned many programs offered for young people, including the Walking School Bus program and the Salvation Army Kids Club – for both of which she volunteers her time.

A native of Arlington, Ohio, Musgrave has participated in 4-H, softball and volleyball. Now, she coaches her own junior high volleyball team and enjoys teaching her players about respect, teamwork, discipline and pride.

At the University, Musgrave has been active as a peer mentor for the First-Year Experience. In this role, she has helped incoming college freshmen adjust to life at UF and worked with the group to complete service projects within the community during orientation weekend in August. Musgrave serves as a role model and leader in many other roles on campus, as well.

Musgrave’s essay was part of an application completed through the joint efforts of many community organizations including The Ohio State University Extension office, Camp Fire USA, Hancock County Educational Service Center, Hancock County schools, Findlay City schools, Youth for Christ and ECLIPSe (Emerging Community Leaders Investment in Philanthropic Service).

America’s Promise – The Alliance for Youth, in partnership with Capital One, chose Findlay-Hancock County for its commitment to provide healthy, safe and caring environments for young people. Toledo is the only other winner in Ohio for 2007. This is the second time Findlay-Hancock County has won the award and is the only Ohio community to repeat the honor.
