Old Main, Renninger, Carrothers Home Selected as UF’s Most Historic Buildings
Thursday, January 04, 2007

Several of The University of Findlay’s most recognizable buildings have been included in the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) Historic Campus Architecture Project (HCAP), the first nationwide architecture and landscape database of independent college and university campuses.

Old Main, Renninger gymnasium and the Carrothers Home were chosen to be included in the project and can be viewed on the CIC HCAP website, www.cic.edu/hcap.

Old Main
Old Main is the oldest building on the Findlay campus.

Built in the late 1800s, Old Main was the largest single college building west of the Appalachian Mountains and the only one in the world heated with natural gas.

Renninger was the second major building project on campus, built in the 1920s. It served as the gymnasium until 1989 when it was converted into the headquarters and on-campus training center for the Environmental Resource Training Center. It was named Renninger Gymnasium in 1982 in honor of Donald Renninger, who had served as coach, athletic director and professor from 1936-1981.

 Carrothers Home
The Carrothers Home lodges UF’s presidents.

The Carrothers Home, located at 1115 N. Main St., has housed all of Findlay’s presidents since its completion in 1933. The home is named after an early donor and trustee, George Carrothers, who in 1907 deeded his frame house at 1113 N. Main St. to be used as a home for Findlay’s presidents.

The CIC HCAP website provides extensive information about significant buildings, landscapes, campus plans and heritage sites of American higher education. Through a user-friendly search engine and a rich set of bibliographic materials, it also guides viewers to a wide variety of sources that they can use for further study. Supported by two grants from the Getty Foundation, the HCAP website documents nearly 2,000 campus sites of historical significance that have been provided by nearly 370 institutions. One of the resources that visitors will find on the website is a collection of more than 4,300 images relating to the featured sites.
