“October Rolls In” by artist Kathryn Gough

“Paintings by Kathryn Gough” will be on display at The University of Findlay Jan. 8 through Feb. 2 in the Dudley and Mary Marks Lea Gallery located in the Virginia B. Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion on the UF campus. The exhibit is open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Much of Gough’s inspiration comes from the Ross County, Ohio, farm where she lives with her husband and works in her studio. “Tending a large garden, walking through the fields and canoeing the Scioto River have given me ideas for paintings such as ‘Rose Path,’ ‘October Rolls In’ and ‘October Reflection on the River,’” said Gough.

Not only does Gough create beautiful landscapes, but she also creates borders around her paintings. She applies gesso, an artist’s primer, with a tiny brush following a design she prepares in pencil on a stretched canvas. After the gesso has dried, Gough brushes on reddish-brown paint, followed by a coat of gold acrylic paint. Although there may appear to be a separate frame, it is all created on canvas with gesso and paint.

Born in Chillicothe, Ohio, to artist parents, Gough knew at the age of 3 that she, too, wanted to become an artist. During her years studying at the Columbus College of Art and Design, Gough learned about color relationships and incorporating texture into a two-dimensional design for visual impact. In 1990, while still earning her bachelor of fine arts degree, Gough was invited to exhibit her paintings at the Nicolae Galerie in Columbus, Ohio, and went on to have her first solo show there in 1991.

Since then, Gough has exhibited in numerous group and solo shows throughout Ohio, and her work can be found in many private collections throughout the United States, as well as the public collections of The Columbus Metropolitan Library, Southern State Community College and Shawnee State University.
