UF to Host Movie for “Vietnam on Campus” Series
Tuesday, February 13, 2007
The University of Findlay will host a movie and discussion as part of the “Vietnam on Campus” series from 6:30-9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, in the Martin Lecture Hall in the William B. Brewer Science Hall. The featured film will be “Me Thao, Once Upon a Time” with Tran Le Hoa Trahn, Ph.D., facilitating a discussion afterwards.
The movie is based on the Vietnamese novel “Chùa Dàn” (Dan Pagoda) by Nguyen Tuan, which explores the question on modernity in early twentieth-century Vietnam. In a tale of haunting love and loss, blended with history, legend and fantasy, the main character turns his back on everything modern after the death of his fiancée. He links her death to the advances of industrial civilization to the background of the music of the thousand-year-old “ca trù” folk tradition.
Tran is a scholar-in-residence from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities – Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), an affiliated member of the Vietnam National University. She holds bachelor’s degrees in English and literature, a master’s degree in Vietnamese literature and her doctoral degree in the theory of history and literature.
The remaining events of this series will be a public lecture and discussion March 20 and a movie and discussion April 12. All events are free and open to the public.
