BSU to Host One-Woman Play March 28

The Black Student Union invites all UF students, faculty and staff to Adilah Barnes’ one-woman historical play, “I Am That I Am: Woman, Black,” at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, in Ritz Auditorium.

Barnes will portray seven remarkable women who lived over the course of 200 years: Sojourner Truth (1797-1883), Harriet Tubman (1823-1913), Mary McLeod Bethune (1875-1955), Zora Neale Hurston (1901-1960), Lorraine Hansberry (1930-1965), Angela Davis (1944-present) and Maya Angelou (1928-present).

“I Am That I Am: Woman, Black,” in its 15th season, has toured nationally in nearly 40 states and internationally in Europe and the Caribbean. It has also been on the touring rosters of the California Arts Council, Nevada Arts Council and the Utah Arts Council.

An award-winning actor with more than 30 years of acting experience, Barnes is best known to television audiences for her role as Anne Marie on ABC’s “Roseanne” for five seasons. She most recently appeared on CBS’ well-received “Cold Case” episode, “Strange Fruit.”

She also appeared in HBO’s critically acclaimed “Iron Jawed Angels” as historical figure Ida B. Wells. Other television credits include the Lifetime series “For the People,” “Gilmore Girls,” “Roswell,” “The Agency,” “Family Law,” “City of Angels,” “Any Day Now,” “Suddenly Susan” and “Mad About You.”

Barnes also has coached some of Hollywood’s hottest stars including Toni Braxton (for Kevin Hill); Jada Pinkett-Smith (for “Set It Off”); Benjamin Bratt (“Law & Order”); Lauren Lane (“The Nanny”); comedian Don “DC” Curry (“Friday After Next”); and others.
