“Invisible Children” Film to be Shown on UF Campus
Tuesday, March 20, 2007
Students at The University of Findlay are sharing what they have learned in the classroom with other students, faculty, staff and community members.
Members of adjunct faculty Patti Berton’s First Year Experience (FYE) classes are working with Crystal Jones, Campus Compact coordinator, to host a showing of the movie “Invisible Children: Rough Cut,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, in the Winebrenner Theological Seminary auditorium.
The FYE courses, designed for first-year students, help freshmen gain friendships and give back to the community, which allows students to become well-rounded adults. Multiple FYE course topics were offered for this academic year. Berton’s classes focused on immigration and diversity, and the students wanted to give back to the community by creating awareness of living conditions in another part of the world.
“Invisible Children: Rough Cut” was filmed in 2003 in Africa. The movie focuses on four young boys who live in a world where children are regularly kidnapped and forced to join the Lord’s Resistance Army, a rebel group in Northern Uganda. This moving film will show Africa through children’s eyes, incorporate humor with heartbreak and inform viewers of the tragedies happening daily in Uganda.
The Invisible Children group is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping “invisible children” all over the world. Its mission is to improve the quality of life for war-affected children by providing access to quality education, enhanced learning environments and innovative economic opportunities for communities. Through the movie, audiences will learn how the organization began, how it involves everyone and ways the organization is creating change.
Following the movie, students from Berton’s FYE classes will discuss related topics and volunteer opportunities. This film is free, and all are invited to attend. For more information, please contact Berton at berton@findlay.edu or Jones at cjones@findlay.edu.
