Pantasia to Perform for UF’s Bach’s Lunch Series
Friday, March 09, 2007
Findlay High School’s Pantasia will perform at noon Friday, March 16, in the Alumni Memorial Union multipurpose room at The University of Findlay as part of the Bach’s Lunch Series. The performance is free and open to the public.
Pantasia was founded in 1997 at the inspiration of its director, Tim Mattis, and the generosity of the Findlay community. The group is comprised of 20 Findlay High School students who play 35 pans, which cover 14 different voices, and a drum set.
Steel drum music originated from civil injustices in Trinidad. Modern day “panning” has become popular and is much more of an art, with popularity of the music growing.
The drums are specially designed and constructed from a metal 55-gallon drum. One end of the barrel is “sunk” by a craftsman to different depths to gain the different pitches for the drums.
