New Scholarship Fund at UF to Aid Education Majors
Tuesday, September 18, 2007
The Larry L. and Joann M. Miles Scholarship Endowment Fund for the College of Education and the Mazza Museum of International Art from Picture Books was recently established at The University of Findlay.
Established to honor Joann’s passion for the promotion of reading and literacy, the scholarship fund will benefit students majoring in education with an emphasis in English/language arts and/or reading. The scholarship recipients also will be volunteers or student directors at the Mazza Museum.
She believed that art in children’s picture books and art at the Mazza Museum should be used to foster a desire to read. Joann became active at the museum in 1989, first as a docent and later as a member of the Mazza Enthusiasts Board where she served until her death in April 2007.
Larry also was active in the museum with his wife. The couple sponsored a gallery at the original Mazza Museum building, and he became a member of the Mazza Museum National Advisory Board in 1998. He also served as chairman of the Mazza Museum Addition Campaign, which raised $2.4 million toward an 8,000-square-foot addition. A dedication ceremony was held in May at the new facility.
The University houses 217 scholarships, awards and program endowments that provide assistance to many students and academic programs. For information about how to establish a scholarship, contact Cindy Lahey in the Office of Development at 419-434-5334.
