Memorial Service for Schmidt to be Held
Saturday, September 22, 2007

The University of Findlay will host a memorial service for James M. Schmidt, assistant professor of mathematics, at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, in Ritz Auditorium on the second floor of Old Main. Schmidt died in August 2007.

Schmidt started teaching at the University in 1995 after retiring from teaching in the public school system. With 30 years of experience teaching mathematics in public schools, principally at the junior high level, Schmidt was prepared to be an excellent teacher and leader at UF. He was hired full time as an instructor with joint responsibilities in the College of Education and the College of Sciences. Eventually, he was named an assistant professor of mathematics at UF.

Schmidt had a love of teaching and a love of students. His friendly manner, amusing mathematics puzzles, interest in student learning and excellent teaching made him well respected by students and colleagues.

Schmidt was in charge of Mathematics Day at the University for several years. He also assisted with accreditation preparation and visitation, and in many small projects in mathematics. He enjoyed being a conversation partner for several international students during the last 10 years. In addition, he participated in the Kake Bridge program at UF and traveled to Japan in 2004.

As Jim approached retirement in the spring, he was eager to share his special knowledge of teacher education with anyone who would be teaching those math classes in the future. He also planned to teach part time.

“We miss his assistance as we continue teaching future educators,” said Anne Albert, co-director of mathematics. “He will be remembered for his impact on so many students, the extraordinary effort he put into his teaching and his friendly manner with all.”
