Jazz Concert Brings Three Artists to Campus
Wednesday, December 05, 2007

“A Formal Night of All That Jazz” will take place at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, in Winebrenner Theological Seminary and will feature musicians Davis and Dow, Galen and Jonathan Blanchard. At the conclusion of the concert will be a tribute to the late Desmond Buford, former director of intercultural student services, with song selections chosen by Barbara Buford, Desmond’s wife.

Community members may purchase tickets for $20 at the door or in advance from the UF Box Office, located in the Alumni Memorial Union. UF students, faculty and staff tickets are free with a UF I.D.

Davis and Dow have been voted “Best Performing Artists” in the nation by college and university students the past four years through Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities. They composed music and were featured on the national TV show “Food Nation with Bobby Flay,” and they have been seen on “Good Morning Grand Caymen,” and “Austin Music Television.” They can be heard on WLRN – National Public Radio, Love94 and WTMI. Galen will entertain Friday night’s audience with the smooth, rich sounds of his flute with support from a bassist and drummer. Galen is an extraordinary flutist from Montclair, N.J. He has performed both domestically and internationally for more than 30 years. Galen attended Berkley College of Music, Boston, Mass., and graduated from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J., with a master’s degree in fine arts and education. He is an arranger, composer, director, educator and writer. To listen to Galen’s music and to read more, click here.

Jonathan Blanchard will inspire listeners with his striking bass voice, commanding attention as he leads audience participants through the respected and historical artistry of Negro spirituals. In fall, 2007, the AmeriColor Opera Alliance Guild presented Jonathan the title role of “Solomon,” a work written especially for him by critically acclaimed composer Sharon Willis.

Jonathan’s stage roles include the priest in “Your Arms Too Short to Box with God,” Bernardo in “West Side Story,” Simeon and Potifer in “Joseph’s Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” Caesar in “Scipio,” the ex-slave in “Do Lord Remember Me” and the lion in “The Wiz.” Jonathan was also the featured singing artist on the PBS film “Underground Railroad – Quilt Code.” To read more about Jonathan, click here.

The evening is being sponsored by Campus Program Board and funded by Student Government Association. For more information, please call 419-434-4606 or e-mail studentactivities@findlay.edu.
