Carruth, Carruth Krock to be Featured in Mazza’s Discovery Series
Saturday, February 16, 2008

At 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, the Mazza Museum will play host to George Carruth and Libby Carruth Krock during its Discovery Series. Carruth, who is known as a sculptor of cast stone images, recently began writing children’s books with his daughter, Carruth Krock, who is an illustrator.

Carruth and his daughter were selected for the Discovery Series after the bookstore at the Mazza Museum picked up the pair’s first book, “The Boy Who Loved Birds.” Staff at the Mazza Museum contacted the Carruths’ manager and invited Carruth and his daughter to take part in the presentation.

“It’s a perfect fit, with people knowing who they are,” said Ben Sapp, director of the Mazza Museum. “It’s very appealing to the community.”

At 2 p.m., the artists will give a 45-minute presentation about their work, and a public autograph session will follow the presentation. Refreshments will be served.

George Carruth began carving stone in Cleveland and then in his driveway in Waterville, Ohio. His designs are featured in dozens of art galleries and catalogs and sold in hundreds of gift shops nationwide. His stone sculptures decorate homes and gardens across the country; one is even displayed in the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. In addition to their production facility, he and his wife, Deb, operate two retail stores, one in Waterville and the other in Columbus. Click here to visit the Carruth Studio Web site.

Libby Carruth Krock is a graduate of the Columbus College of Art and Design and is a freelance artist in Portland, Ore. Click here to visit her Web site.

The Discovery Series at the Mazza Museum is a visiting artist presentation that occurs every one to three years. It features an up-and-coming children’s book artist who has published one or two works and is just beginning his or her career.

Admission is free to UF students, and there is a $5 entrance fee for the public.
