Loosely based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, an American actress, burlesque entertainer and writer, and her relationship with her domineering mother, “Gypsy” was written by Arthur Laurents, with music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Lee’s mother, Mama Rose, is known as “the ultimate show business mother.” “Gypsy” follows the dreams and efforts of Rose to raise two daughters to perform onstage and casts an affectionate eye on the hardships of show business life.
Senior January Blank will play the part of Mama Rose.
The musical contains many songs that became popular standards, including “Small World,” “Everything’s Coming up Roses,” “You’ll Never Get Away from Me” and “Let Me Entertain You.”
Micheal F. Anders, Ph.D., professor and director of UF’s music program, is producer and music director for the show. Vicki McClurkin, adjunct professor of theatre at UF, is stage director. Steven Brown, adjunct dance instructor at UF, is choreographer. Jerry Deall, assistant professor of scenic and lighting design at UF, is the production’s scenic and lighting designer.
