Artist’s Work on Display in the 1124 Gallery
Tuesday, April 15, 2008
The paintings and drawings of Valerie Escobedo, instructor of art, are on display at The University of Findlay’s 1124 Gallery, located at 1124 N. Cory St. on campus. The display may be viewed from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday through May 30.
“On a daily basis, we experience instances and combinations of being physically, emotionally and mentally present to and absent from the people and world around us,” said Escobedo in her artist’s statement. “I believe that, as human beings, we constantly search for moments of presence and connection, while living a life that is also full of many moments of disconnection, absence and distraction. My work is a visual product of my desires and attempts to remain ‘checked in’ to life and to communicate the potency I recognize in banal domestic moments.”
Escobedo is recently married and finds inspiration and motivation for her work in her relationship with her husband. Individual paintings represent fragments of time within a larger narrative structure, and the complexity of a relationship and narrative are constructed as the paintings group together and function in reference to one another.
