David Wallach Remembered at Memorial Service

David WallachThe University of Findlay will hold a memorial service for the late professor David C. Wallach, who died March 28, at 4 p.m. Friday, April 25, in the Ritz Auditorium in Old Main.

Wallach joined The University of Findlay mathematics faculty in 1984 and would have celebrated his 65th birthday and his retirement at commencement, May 3, 2008. Wallach dedicated his life to his career and was honored with the title assistant professor emeritus of mathematics (in memoriam) for his extraordinary service to the University.

Wallach earned his bachelor of science degree in education from Wright State University. He started his teaching career at New Knoxville High School in 1965. In 1971 he was hired by Piqua High School and served on the mathematics faculty and as chairman of mathematics for many years. He completed his master’s degree at Rutgers University and taught at Edison State College.

At The University of Findlay, Wallach was a part of many curricular changes in mathematics. He served as chairman of the division of mathematics and computer science and then as director of mathematics. He had a love of teaching and a love of students and was always encouraging students to major in mathematics. He had a casual, joking relationship with his advisees and often continued contact with them after they graduated.

Wallach was active across campus, serving as a fraternity adviser, adviser for Student Government Association, and on various committees. He served many years as faculty athletic representative. At the fall football games he was the voice of the Oiler Brass.

Wallach was active in the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics (OCTM) and the Ohio Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). He was an invited speaker at OCTM meetings and served as liaison between the two groups.
