Teacher of the Year to Speak at Symposium
Thursday, April 03, 2008

Deb WickerhamThe University of Findlay’s College of Education welcomes alumna Deb Wickerham, a fifth-grade teacher at Chamberlin Hill Intermediate School and an adjunct professor at UF, as a featured speaker during the second annual Symposium for Scholarship and Creativity at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, in the Alumni Memorial Union.

Wickerham is an inclusion teacher who works with students with hearing impairments and was named 2008 Ohio Teacher of the Year. She has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education/deaf education from Bowling Green State University and a master’s degree in educational leadership from The University of Findlay.

Wickerham was a Presidential Award winner for elementary science in 1999 and received her National Board Certification in 2001.

In addition, Wickerham was grant chairperson and instrumental in the creation of the A.P.P.L.E. Learning Bus, a mobile science lab. The movable classroom enables instructors to teach students while performing actual scientific testing.

She received the Vernier Elementary Technology Award and CIBA International Elementary Science Teacher Award for her efforts.

Wickerham’s role model for teaching is Annie Sullivan, Helen Keller’s teacher. She believes in the “whatever it takes” philosophy to enable children to be winners in life. Invitational learning guides her to create a classroom that is a fun, exciting and safe learning community.

Each college will host a speaker during the symposium. The College of Business will host Terry Terhark. The College of Health Professions will host Julie Hammer. The College of Sciences will host Robert G. Verb, Ph.D. The College of Liberal Arts will host Adam Brannon.
