Walgreens Funds Diversity Initiatives
Tuesday, November 11, 2008

The University of Findlay’s School of Pharmacy is developing initiatives to support diversity among pharmacy students.

“Diversity is important to all for the stability it brings during times of stress, the different mindsets it offers for problem solving and for the sheer joy that contact with other cultures can provide,” said Donald Stansloski, R.Ph., Ph.D., dean of the School of Pharmacy.

Recently, Walgreens pharmacy provided $10,000 in funding for the initiative, with a portion of the donation designated as scholarship funding. A scholarship will be awarded to a pharmacy student who promotes diversity issues on the UF campus.

Other parts of the initiative include recruitment of a more diverse student population.  Karen Rettig, pharmacy admission coordinator, has attended two college fairs for minority populations. In addition, a diversity council was formed within the School of Pharmacy. There also are plans to create a professional diversity organization.

In 2007, the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) granted The University of Findlay’s School of Pharmacy candidate certification. UF’s School of Pharmacy will receive full accreditation from ACPE after at least one class has graduated from the program. The first class to graduate from the UF School of Pharmacy will be the Class of 2010.
