The University of Findlay awarded G. Norman Nicholson an honorary doctor of public service degree at commencement ceremonies Dec. 13.

Nicholson is a former senior vice president of marketing at Marathon Oil Co. and a distinguished community leader.

“During his active career and following his retirement, Mr. Nicholson has been extensively involved and highly effective in public service organizations,” said DeBow Freed, Ph.D., president of the University. “The breadth and depth of his service in those organizations is laudatory.”

Nicholson has served as a board member, and frequently chair, of the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation, United Way of Hancock County, Campfire Girls and Boys, Family Services of Hancock County and Findlay-Hancock County Public Library. He has served for 25 years on the board of trustees of the Blanchard Valley Health System, the last eight years as its chair.

He served with distinction as a trustee of the University for 15 years, after which he was elected trustee emeritus and has served in that capacity for 18 years.
