Copyright Issues for Visual Artists to be Discussed
Monday, March 16, 2009
“Color This Law Gray: Copyright Issues for Visual Artists” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 23, at The University of Findlay by Mark Schaffer, a Toledo-based attorney specializing in trademark and copyright law. The presentation will be held in the Pfeiffer Lecture Hall in the Virginia B. Gardner Fine Art Pavilion on campus. There is no cost to attend. The event is sponsored by the Commercial Arts Guild of Findlay. Schaffer will discuss the recent case brought by Associated Press against graphic designer Shepard Fairey for his now-famous Barack Obama “Hope” campaign poster. Fairey used an image by AP photographer Mannie Garcia as his reference for the artwork.
Other examples of notable copyright cases in the visual arts will be shown, followed by a question-and-answer period. For additional information, contact Anne Beekman, assistant professor of graphic design, at beekman@findlay.edu.
