Collaborative Learning to be Topic of Discussion
Wednesday, March 18, 2009

The University of Findlay will host a public presentation by Dr. Mara Holt, associate professor of English at Ohio University, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, in the Davis Street Building, Room 102.

Holt will present “Because Collaborative Learning, Like Democracy, is Misunderstood, Subverted and Harder than it Looks (or Different Than it Seems).” The public is welcome to attend.

Holt’s presentation will address topics such as why collaborative learning is relevant today; under what conditions it has been successful; its challenges and myths; and how collaborative learning is useful.

Beginning with a history of collaborative learning, Holt will trace the development of collaborative learning — its challenges, its successes and its current uses in international and transnational education, as well as in business culture. Finally, she will suggest practical guidelines for productive collaborative learning, share resources and invite conversation with the audience.

Holt publishes on collaborative learning and on academic labor. She is writing a book called “Collaborative Learning and Composition Studies” in a series edited by Charles Bazerman. She has directed four writing centers since she learned about peer tutoring at Kenneth Bruffee’s Brooklyn College Summer Institute in Collaborative Learning and Training Peer Tutors in 1980.
