The Pulse Earns State Awards
Tuesday, March 03, 2009
The University of Findlay’s student newspaper, The Pulse, recently was awarded four honors from the Ohio Newspaper Association. Last year, The Pulse was the first college newspaper to be included in judging, and this year, it was one of two college newspapers to be honored.
The Pulse was judged as one newspaper out of many in the Osman C. Hooper Newspaper Show, which honors the best weekly newspapers in Ohio.
The newspaper received honorable mention in four areas: in-depth reporting, local features, original column writing and newspaper design. Honorable mention is the highest honor a collegiate newspaper may receive since it is competing against professional newspapers.
Recent UF graduate David Springer was honored for the second year in a row for his column writing. Comments from the judges included that, although they disagreed with Springer’s stance on the issues, he had the mark of a well-thought and useful social critic. Springer is currently a graduate student in psychology at Ohio University.
Students Angie Darr, Lisa Ragland and Elizabeth Lewis-House wrote the six stories the judges honored in the in-depth reporting and local feature categories. The issue honored for design was the Jan. 31, 2007, issue.
Judges included professionals from Bowling Green State University, The Ohio State University School of Communication and the LondyLawrence advertising agency of Columbus.
