UF to Host “Reflections on Trauma: From Guilt to Shame, From Auschwitz to Abu Ghraib”
Monday, October 26, 2009
Ruth Leys will present “Reflections on Trauma: From Guilt to Shame, From Auschwitz to Abu Ghraib” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at The University of Findlay in the Alumni Memorial Union.
In her presentation, Leys draws from history’s more recent and horrific examples of torture and genocide to address the concept of survivor guilt and the momentous but often unrecognized significance of guilt’s replacement by shame.
Leys is professor of humanities at Johns Hopkins University. She earned her Ph.D. in the history of science from Harvard University. She is the author of multiple books, including “Trauma: A Genealogy” and “From Guilt to Shame: Auschwitz and After.”
