Competency Exams
Competency tests give you the opportunity to meet certain graduation requirements without having to take a specific course.  However, if you pass the test, you will not receive a grade nor will you receive any hours towards graduation.

COMPUTER SCIENCE
To learn more about the computer science competency exam, please contact the administrative assistant for the department of Computer Science at roth@findlay.edu  or ext. 4637.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Rather than being a competency exam, the tests for foreign languages are placement exams.  The University offers placement exams in French and Spanish.  The exam results tell you what course or courses you have placed out of as well as what course you have placed into. To receive college credit in a language, you must test out of a 200-level course. MATH
 
The purpose of the Mathematics Placement Test is to determine if your first mathematics class at The University of Findlay should be pre-calculus or calculus.  You should only take the test if you are comfortable with the topics of trigonometry, logarithms and exponential functions and you wish to register for calculus your first semesterFor additional information, click on the link for Math Placement Test

PUBLIC SPEAKING 
To access the requirements for the Speech Competency Exam to exempt you from COMM 110, go to Speech Competency Requirements .

READING 
To meet the competency requirement for being exempt form taking ENGL 145, College and Professional Reading, you must score a 23 in the reading portion of the ACT test or receive a 540 on the English/Verbal score of the SAT exam.  You may also enroll in the course and take a competency test during the first class session to see if you are able to test out of the course. 

WRITING 
To meet the competency requirement for being exempt from taking ENGL 106, College Writing II, you must achieve a 5 on the Advanced Placement Test in Literature and Composition that you take while you are in high school.  To place into ENGL 106, you must meet at least one of these criteria:  (1) earn a combined ACT English and ACT Reading score of 50 or higher; or (2) earn an SAT Verbal score of 590 or higher. If you have taken both the ACT and SAT, both scores are taken into account in determining your writing placement.
