Frequently Asked Questions

Faculty Guide to Technology Resources and Support at
The University of Findlay

Several different administrative offices at The University of Findlay provide support and resources to faculty in the use of technology, including Information Technology Services (ITS) and Academic Technology Services (ATS). The following question and answer sheet has been prepared to help you determine the most appropriate administrative office to contact for some frequently-asked technology questions. For any questions not answered here, please contact ITS Technology Support Services at ext. 4357 (HELP).

Phones and Network Access

Q. I am new to campus, and need to access the computer network, including Blackboard and e-mail.
A.
A UFNet account allows you to access the campus university network. The UFNet account application form is available online. You will receive notification from ITS regarding your UFNet username and password.

Q. I am new to campus, and am having trouble using the phone in my office.
A. Contact the ITS Administrative office at ext. 4848.

Q. I am having trouble connecting to the Internet on campus using my office computer.
A. Contact ITS Technology Support Services at ext. 4357 (HELP) or techsupport@findlay.edu.

Q. I am interested in connecting to the university network from my home computer.
A. Sign up for a campus workshop offered by ITS presenting the VPN client (Virtual Private Network), which will allow you to access the campus network while off-site. View available workshops (taught by both ATS and ITS staff).

Hardware

Q. The computer in my office is not working properly.
A. Contact ITS Technology Support Services at ext. 4357 (HELP) or techsupport@findlay.edu.

Q. I am traveling on university business and would like to take a laptop computer on the trip.
A. Contact the ITS Loaner Pool, located in the Shafer Library, at ext. 6770. Equipment may also be reserved online.

Q. I would like to take my own digital photos for use in the classroom.
A
. Contact Cheryl Cape, Academic Technology Specialist, Faculty Liaison, ext. 5480, or cape@findlay.edu, to discuss an Individual Professional Partnership, where full-time faculty members may be eligible for technology equipment and/or training to enhance their teaching.

Software

Q. I would like to learn more about using PowerPoint effectively in the classroom.
A. Sign up for an ATS PowerPoint workshop offered through the Teaching, Learning and Technology Center (TLTC), ext. 4538.

 Q. I use Microsoft Word to prepare documents, and would like to learn more about the features within the program.
A. The University has purchased the access to Atomic Learning, www.AtomicLearning.com, where numerous tutorials are presented on many software products.  Also, you can sign up for a campus workshop on Microsoft Word, ext. 4538.

Q. I would like to purchase Microsoft software on my home computer to match my office machine. 
A. The University has a campus agreement with Microsoft, where you can purchase select software at a discounted price. Stop by the campus bookstore for more information.

Q. I am planning on purchasing software for academic use within my discipline.
A. Contact ATS at ext. 4538 to discuss the software purchase, and how its purchase and use coordinates with current software use on campus.

Technology-Enhanced Classrooms

Q. I am interested in using multi-media materials for instruction during my traditional class on campus.
A. Contact the Facilities Director at ext. 6942 to have your class scheduled in a Technology-Enhanced classroom, where computer equipment and a projector are standard equipment, including a DVD and VHS player.

Q. I am teaching in a Technology-Enhanced classroom, and having trouble with the equipment.
A. Contact Lora Rettig, Academic Labs and Services Manager, at ext. 5968 or rettig@findlay.edu.

Q. I would like to have my students use computers for just a few weeks during the semester.
A. Contact Kelly Vackert, Coordinator of Academic Computer Services, at ext. 6926 or vackert@findlay.edu to reserve time in the intermittent-use computer lab, Main 310.

Online Instruction

Q. I am interested in teaching a class online.
A. Contact ATS at ext. 4538 to sign up for the Online Certification workshop. Every faculty member who teaches online is encouraged to participate in the Online Certification process, which introduces faculty to all the features available for teaching online, and certifies faculty as effective online instructors. Also, numerous additional workshops are available at the TLTC that provide training to enhance your online instruction.

Q. I am teaching online, and do not understand how to use all the features in Blackboard.
A. Contact a member of the ATS Blackboard Support Team, ext. 5513, or blackboard@findlay.edu. Also, sign up for a Blackboard workshop offered by ATS, ext. 4538.

Program Instruction

Q. Several faculty colleagues within my program have been discussing the purchase of equipment and software for program use. 
A. Contact Ray McCandless, ATS Director, at ext. 4565, or mccandless@findlay.edu, to determine if the project qualifies as an Academic Program Partnership. Academic Program Partnerships fund new strategies to innovative pedagogical techniques and/or inventive uses of educational technology tools to enhance teaching and learning.
