Career Planning and Undeclared Major Advising
Step by Step to Career Success
There are many steps you can take during your first year at Findlay to make sure your career plans are on the right track.
Get to know your academic advisor
Talk with your advisor about your career ideas and the professional direction you hope to go in after graduation. Take classes they are teaching. Talk with them more often than just when it's time to register for classes.
Ask them to review all of the courses you will need to complete for your major and the other non-major requirements for completing your degree, including General Education and Competency requirements.
If your major offers Emphasis Areas of study, discuss the specific requirements for each and which would be best for pursuing your career goals.
Discuss options for field placements, internships, co-ops, summer jobs, and other opportunities to gain experience in your future field.
Talk with your advisor about the kinds of employment graduates in your major have gone on to or the graduate programs and schools that have accepted them.
Be sure you understand any application processes, licensing exams, or other requirements you need to fulfill to move forward in your program or to qualify for your profession upon graduation.
Learn about your major and graduation requirements
Use the Degree Audit option on the UF Student Academic Information system to generate a list of the courses you will need for your major and other university requirements. You can also use the system to track what courses you have completed and which ones you still need to do.
Review the academic areas and courses included under the areas for General Education requirements. Identify courses that will not only satisfy GE requirements but also enhance your skills and training for your future professional field.
If your program will allow time to complete a minor, consider adding one to your degree plans. Minors are an excellent way to develop a second area of training to complement your major and increase your career flexibility.
