About Disability Services

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I access services?  How often?
It is recommended that you visit the office or call to schedule an appointment by calling the Director at 419-434-5532. With appropriate documentation, students with permanent or temporary disabilities can receive free services while enrolled at UF. You will need to register every semester or every time you get a new schedule.
The University asks that students make a request for accommodations at the beginning of a semester or 1 week prior to needed acccommodation. As a general rule, accommodations will not be retroactive.

2. Where can a student get tested if he/she has concerns that they have a learning disability?
Contact your insurance company to check on your coverage through your own insurance plan. Please contact the office for local referral information.

3. How much individual attention will I receive as a disability student?
As a UF student, you can expect to receive the same level of services and attention as non-disabled students, with the exception of your accommodation needs. We may ask you to meet in the office on a regular basis, or we may only see you as often as you want to make appointments for assistance.

4. Are there special classes for students with disabilities at UF?
Unlike high schools, UF does not offer special or remedial classes for students with disabilities. UF does offer stepping stone classes for all students depending on academic records and/or ACT/SAT scores.

5. Is tutoring available to students with disabilities?
Yes, FREE tutoring is available to all UF students. Please visit the Academic Support Center website for detailed information: http://www.findlay.edu/offices/asc/index.html

6.

Is the campus wheelchair accessible?
The majority of classroom buildings are accessible on campus. The director of disability services will make arrangements with the facilities director to arrange accessibility to classes/meetings or events.

7.   Do all of my professors need to know about my disability?
NO. It is your choice to which professors you would like to disclose your limitations. With your permission, the professors of your classes will get a notice with your name and accommodations. The director will not discuss diagnosis with any faculty or staff member unless you sign a release of information form.
