Network Access System
The University's wired and wireless networks are secured by a Network Access System (NAS). This system requires users to have up-to-date anti-virus software, anti-spyware software, current operating system security patches, and the UF Security Notification software.
The first time you connect your computer to the UF Network, you will be asked to download a small program that runs in the background and transmits information about your computer's software back to the NAS. After this program is installed, computers failing to meet any of the requirements will be sent notification with directions for addressing deficiencies. Technology Support Services (ext. 4357 on campus) is also available to assist you.
The list of student computer requirements is:
- Up-to-date operating system and patches, including Windows XP >=SP2, Windows Vista, Mac OS >=10.4, and Linux
- Up-to-date anti-virus software with current definitions, including Symantec, AVG, Avast, McAfee, Norton, OneCare, and Trend Micro
- Up-to-date Anti-spyware Software with current definitions, including Windows Defender, Spybot, AdAware, AVG, Norton 360, Norton Internet Security, OneCare, Symantec Endpoint Protection, and Trend Micro.
- UF Emergency Notification system (Lynx)
- Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.5 or later
