How to Run Windows Update
ITS recommends that you run Windows Update occasionally on your computer to insure you have the newest security updates.
- Open Internet Explorer and go to the Web address http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. (An alternate method is to open Internet Explorer and click on Tools, then on Windows Update).
- Click on . This will compare the information on your computer to the updates available and then display all of the updates you DO NOT have on your system.
- Click on . This will by default select only the Critical Updates.*
- Click on . This will begin the download and installation of the updates selected.**
Currently, there are no known issues with Critical Updates.
ITS has experienced some problems with wireless network cards after running Windows XP and Driver Updates. ITS takes no responsibility for problems that incur after performing a Windows Update.
Thank you very much for your cooperation as we attempt to maintain a secure and troublefree computing environment for the campus community.
*Critical Updates are the only updates; however if you wish, there are other updates for your operating system and/or hardware drivers which you can install. Please remember these updates can possibly change settings, change the way applications run, and in some situations actually cause software or hardware to not perform correctly.
**Windows Update may need to be ran more than one time to install all of the necessary updates. This may take several minutes and will utilize most of your computers resources, so please do not attempt to do other functions while Windows Update is running.
