Catherine Achord Spanish Scholarship After her retirement as director of the Findlay-Hancock County Public Library, Catherine Achord came to The University of Findlay to study Spanish. Her enthusiasm and hard work endeared her to students a fraction of her age. Later, when her hearing failed and she could not attend classes herself, she established a scholarship for students majoring in Spanish, holding junior or senior status with at least a 3.0 GPA.
When Miss Achord passed away in 1989, she remembered The University of Findlay in her will so that an endowed scholarship could be established in her name.Fund Balance as of 6/30/11 - $18,600Barry Alexander Memorial Theatre ScholarshipBarry Alexander was director of theatre and a member of the UF faculty from 1977 until his untimely death of acute leukemia in September of 1994. Betts Scholarship is awarded to outstanding students studying in the discipline of political science and who display potential for leadership in public affairs and government service. A native of Findlay, Congressman Betts was a U.S. Representative from 1951 to 1972 for Ohio’s Eighth Congressional District, a former speaker of the Ohio House (1945-1946) and a local attorney. He passed away at the age of 89 in August 1993. Janice and Dennis Bishop Scholarship Mr. and Mrs. Dennis E. Bishop established this scholarship to assist students enrolled in the Religious Studies Program who are preparing for Christian ministry and/or church work. James H. Brannigan Musical Theatre Guest Artist EndowmentMargaret (Peggy) McGinty Brannigan established the James H. Brannigan Musical Theatre Guest Artist Endowment Fund at The University of Findlay in honor of her husband’s memory and his longtime support of the arts and musical theatre. Mr. Brannigan displayed his love of music as early as 9 or 10 years old when he took the train downtown on Saturdays to hear Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Philharmonic Orchestra. While coping with frequent career transfers as an adult, finding the closest symphony or nearest theater topped his agenda when adapting to each new town! For many years, The University of Findlay contributed many evenings for his enjoyment.The purpose of this fund is to provide yearly guest artists of national/international stature to present concert performances for the University and Findlay communities and to work with the UF musical theatre students for a period of concentrated experience.Fund Balance - Newly EndowedG. Cable ’64 Instrumental Music ScholarshipAlum Ron Cable established this scholarship in 2006 for students who are participating in at least one instrumental music ensemble with first preference given to members of the Oiler Brass Marching Band. John and Margaret Firmin ScholarshipThe John and Margaret Firmin Scholarship is an endowed merit scholarship established by Margaret Firmin ’81 and her husband, John C. Firmin, to be awarded to a student majoring in the fine arts. Recipients should have an outstanding academic record entering their junior or senior year. Students must be dedicated to theatre as demonstrated by excellent participation and growth in theatre work at The University of Findlay. The University of Findlay has been blessed beyond telling by the Freed's unstinting service and inspired by the way they exemplify in their daily lives the values we all hold dear. This series invites nationally known speakers to explore the nature of possible Christian responses to existing and emerging contemporary issues in an increasingly pluralistic world. Visiting speakers will engage students and faculty of all three sponsoring institutions, as well as clergy and community members in a variety of ways, including classes, lectures, and small-group discussions. Gift of Hope Hispanic ScholarshipThe undergraduate language and culture program at The University of Findlay has established this scholarship to assist its students in furthering their education at The University of Findlay. Kramer ScholarshipMary Trevorrow Kramer of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., the late wife of Worth H. Kramer, established this scholarship to honor her husband, who passed away in 1998. Mr. Kramer, born in Montpelier, Ind., and raised in Findlay, Ohio, gives off not a little light as a shining example of a man who became a success in the talent end of broadcasting — including as a performer, announcer and talent director — then switched over to become just as successful on the business side. Mr. Kramer owned radio stations in Ohio and Sarasota, Fla., and eventually held the positions of president and general manager of WJR Detroit and executive vice president of Capital Cities Broadcasting Co. at the time of his retirement. Mr. Kramer was also a past president and director of the Adcraft Club of Detroit, one of the most active and respected marketing and advertising organizations and the oldest, largest local advertising club in the nation. J. Paul Mellott Instrumental Music ScholarshipThrough a bequest, Mr. Mellott established The J. Paul Mellott Instrumental Music Scholarship. This scholarship shall be awarded annually to a student currently playing an instrument at UF with preference being piano or organ. Mr. Mellott had a love for music and began his career as the organ accompanist for the silent movies at the age of 18 at the Victory Theater in Findlay. He also served as organist for his church. Mr. Monroe was a 1942 graduate of Findlay College and served as a member of the Board of Trustees from 1962-1980 and served as Trustee Emeritus from 1987-1999. He received his honorary degree in 1961. This scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in political science or preparing for public service in government or politics. Montague, a faculty member at The University of Findlay since 1986, has established the Robert J. and Janice L. Montague Service Scholarship Endowment Fund at The University of Findlay to honor her parents. Bob and Jan Montague have served their lives as role models of generosity and service to others. Thus, this endowment has been established to extend that kindness and support to students who are building their communities through civic engagement while they pursue their college degrees. This scholarship is awarded to students who are enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts who demonstrate leadership qualities and a commitment to serving others, either through volunteerism or other forms of civic engagement. Dr. Jean C. Nye Music ScholarshipThrough the generosity of family and friends, the Dr. Jean C. Nye Music Scholarship Endowment Fund has been established at The University of Findlay. She served as a professor and administrator at Findlay from 1959-2000. Dr. Nye’s love for music was evident in many ways. She played the organ at her church, sang in the choir and was always playing music while working in her office. This scholarship shall be awarded to a full-time student participating in a vocal and/or instrumental music program at The University of Findlay who has a 3.0 or better GPA.Fund Balance as of 6/30/11 - $25,251 Dr. Jean C. This scholarship will assist psychology students in their sophomore, junior or senior year of study who maintain a 2.7 or better GPA. Because of her love of instrumental music, it is her desire to encourage young people to take advantage of this opportunity and continue to grow in the music field. Students may be in their sophomore, junior or senior year of study and must have at least a 2.8 GPA.Fund Balance as of 6/30/11 - $9,741 Jack and Patricia Taylor Instrumental Music ScholarshipIn conjunction with the 125th Endowed Funds Drive, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Taylor established the Jack and Patricia Taylor Instrumental Music Scholarship Endowment Fund to recognize outstanding students and to encourage the study of instrumental music. Jack has served as director of bands at the University since 1980. His wife, Pat, holds two degrees from the University: an associate’s degree in Humanities (’89) and a bachelor’s degree in Accounting (’93). She has performed in the bands for many years as a community member and has been a strong supporter of the band program in Findlay.Any full-time student in the instrumental music program with sufficient financial need and a GPA of 3.4 or higher may be considered for this scholarship. Van Nice Choral Scholarship was established in 1991 by friends and UF alumni. “Doc John” joined the Findlay College faculty in 1947 and retired in 1980.
